How do you calculate CBM?

CBM (cubic meters) is length times width times height, with all three measured in meters. For one carton, multiply the three dimensions in meters. For a shipment, multiply the per-carton CBM by the number of cartons. This calculator converts centimeters or inches to meters for you, so you can enter dimensions in whatever unit your packing list uses.

How many CBM fit in a 20ft or 40ft container?

Accepted Answer

A standard 20ft container holds roughly 28 usable CBM, a 40ft holds about 58, and a 40ft high-cube (40HC) about 68, once you allow for realistic loadability of around 80 percent. The full internal volumes are larger, but you rarely fill every corner because of pallets, carton orientation, and stacking limits, so a usable figure gives a more honest estimate.

Why is my real container fit lower than the calculator says?

This tool assumes cartons can be stacked to use the container volume efficiently. In practice, fit is reduced by pallet footprints, cartons that do not divide evenly into the container dimensions, weight limits reached before volume is full (dense cargo), and cargo that cannot be stacked. Treat the result as a planning estimate, then confirm with your freight forwarder for a firm load plan.

Does the calculator account for weight limits?

Accepted Answer

It reports total weight if you enter a per-carton weight, but the container-fit count is based on volume only. Heavy or dense cargo can hit a container weight limit before the volume is full, so always check the payload limit of the specific container and any road weight limits for the destination.
